Several common illnesses can be treated with medications and treatments. Conditions treated include those affecting the heart, lungs, kidneys, intestine, stomach, and blood. Some conditions require hospitalization for long periods, while others can be managed at home. Treatment often includes medication and therapy, and surgery may also be necessary.
When patients with common illnesses come to the doctor, they may seek treatment for symptoms such as fever, headache, sore throat, or cough. In many cases, the diagnosis of the illness can be made based on these symptoms. However, in some cases, further testing may be required to determine the cause of the symptoms.
A patient’s diagnosis and the specific illness or condition that they are experiencing are important factors in determining the treatments that will be prescribed.
When treating a patient with a common illness, it is important to start by ruling out any more serious causes. This includes checking for fever, flu-like symptoms, shortness of breath, chest pain, headache, diarrhea, or vomiting. If these are not present or are mild and could be caused by another condition, doctors will likely test for other causes of the symptoms.
If tests reveal a more serious cause of the symptoms (for example, a bacterial infection), doctors will prescribe antibiotics to fight the infection. In some cases, additional treatments may also be recommended (such as antiviral medications).
Patients taking medication should always check with their doctor before stopping or changing their medication regimen. Doing so can sometimes result in the worsening of their symptoms.
Patients may encounter the common cold, the flu, bronchitis, pneumonia, and allergy symptoms such as sneezing and an itchy rash. Many of these illnesses can be treated with over-the-counter or prescription medications. However, in some cases, treatments may require consultation with a doctor. This will help to ensure the appropriate treatment is administered. In some cases, simple rest and hydration may suffice; in others, more intensive treatments may be required. Some common treatments for common illnesses include
- Over-the-counter medications such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen for pain relief.
- Prescription medications such as antibiotics for infections or antihistamines for allergic reactions.
- Surgery if a condition is life-threatening or cannot be treated with medication or therapy.
