Florida law mandates that individuals seeking care after a motor vehicle accident must consult a licensed provider within 14 days to remain eligible for PIP benefits. An EMC is defined as a medical condition presenting acute symptoms of such severity—potentially including intense pain—that without immediate medical attention, the following risks could occur:

Serious jeopardy to patient health
Serious impairment of bodily functions
Serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part

A licensed medical professional conducts a comprehensive examination and may order diagnostic tests such as bloodwork, an EKG, or X-rays. The provider determines whether the condition qualifies as an EMC under Florida law. Immediate treatment plans and next steps are discussed, with all necessary documentation provided.

What is the process for an EMC evaluation?

Information Collection: Patients share accident details, medical history, and insurance information.
Examination: A medical provider evaluates injuries like pain or mobility issues.
Testing: X-rays, EKGs, or bloodwork might be order for further medical insights.
Treatment: Immediate care is provided, along with next steps like follow-ups or specialist referrals.

What should I bring to my evaluation?

Identification and Insurance Information: Government issued identification, auto insurance and health insurance cards.
Accident Details: Any documents related to the incident, like police reports or accident summaries.
Medical Records: Any relevant prior medical records or information about pre-existing conditions.
Referral Form (if applicable): A referral from your healthcare provider, if they are directing you to TGH Urgent Care for evaluation or treatment.

Do I need a referral for an EMC evaluation?

A referral is not required to undergo an EMC evaluation at any of our clinic locations. This service is available on a walk-in basis from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, seven days a week.

Will my insurance cover the evaluation and treatment?

Insurance coverage for your evaluation and treatment depends on your specific policy. Most auto insurance plans, particularly those with Personal Injury Protection (PIP), typically cover evaluations and necessary treatments following a motor vehicle accident. Some health insurance policies may also contribute to coverage. What type of medical professionals are qualified to perform an EMC?

Under Florida law, only specific medical professionals are authorized to diagnose EMCs: Orthopedic physicians (MD), Osteopathic physicians (DO), Dentists, Physician assistants, Advanced Practice Registered Nurse.
