Strep throat is a bacterial infection that causes inflammation and pain in the throat. It’s most commonly caused by Group A Streptococcus bacteria and can affect individuals of all ages, particularly children. This page explores the symptoms, transmission, diagnosis, and treatment of strep throat so you can take the appropriate steps to get relief and care for yourself or a loved one.

What is Strep Throat?

Strep throat is a contagious condition that spreads through respiratory droplets. It can lead to serious complications if left untreated, such as rheumatic fever or kidney inflammation. Unlike viral sore throats, strep throat typically requires antibiotic treatment to fully resolve the infection.

Common Symptoms of Strep Throat

Symptoms often appear quickly and may include:

  • Sudden and severe sore throat
  • Pain when swallowing
  • Red and swollen tonsils, sometimes with white patches or streaks of pus
  • Tiny red spots on the roof of the mouth
  • Swollen lymph nodes in the neck
  • Fever (especially 101°F or higher)
  • Headache or body aches
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of appetite or nausea (especially in children)

If you or your child are experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s important to seek testing and treatment.

How Strep Throat Spreads

Strep throat is highly contagious and spreads through:

  • Coughing or sneezing
  • Sharing drinks, utensils, or personal items
  • Touching surfaces contaminated with the bacteria

Preventive measures include frequent handwashing, covering the mouth when coughing or sneezing, and avoiding close contact with infected individuals.

Strep Testing: Diagnosis

There are two main methods used to diagnose strep throat:

1. Rapid Strep Test

  • Takes only a few minutes to perform
  • Involves swabbing the back of the throat
  • Detects the presence of Group A Streptococcus antigens
  • Offers quick results, often during your visit

2. Throat Culture

  • Also involves a throat swab
  • Sent to a lab for further analysis
  • More accurate but results may take 24–48 hours

At Fast Track Urgent Care, we offer both testing options to ensure accurate diagnosis and timely treatment.

Treatment Options

If strep throat is confirmed, your provider will typically prescribe antibiotics such as penicillin or amoxicillin. These:

  • Reduce the severity and duration of symptoms
  • Lower the risk of spreading the infection to others
  • Prevent potential complications

Patients are advised to:

  • Complete the full course of antibiotics even if symptoms improve
  • Stay home from school or work for at least 24 hours after starting antibiotics
  • Drink plenty of fluids and get rest
  • Use over-the-counter medications (e.g., ibuprofen or acetaminophen) to manage pain and fever

When to See a Doctor

Seek medical attention if you experience:

  • Persistent or worsening sore throat
  • Difficulty swallowing or breathing
  • Fever over 101°F that lasts more than 48 hours
  • Rash in addition to a sore throat
  • Symptoms that do not improve within 48 hours of starting antibiotics

If you suspect strep throat, don’t wait. Early testing and treatment can help you feel better faster and avoid complications.
