From Seashell Cuts to Jellyfish Stings: Tampa Beach Injuries We See All the Time

There’s nothing quite like a Florida beach day. You pack the cooler, grab the sunscreen, and head toward the sun, sand, and saltwater. Whether it’s a family picnic on the sand, paddleboarding through calm waters, or a spontaneous barefoot walk at sunset, St. Petersburg’s beaches are the heartbeat of summer living. But even paradise comes with its own hazards—some sharp, some stinging, and others just plain strange.

At TGH Urgent Care powered by Fast Track, we’ve seen the aftermath of just about every beach adventure gone sideways. And while not every beach injury is an emergency, a lot of them are more serious (or painful) than you might think. From seashell slices and stingray encounters to full-body sunburns and unexpected allergic reactions, here’s what we see most often at our St. Petersburg 4th Street location—and what you should know before your next day in the sand.

Sharp Shells, Barnacles, and Coral Scrapes

It happens fast: one step into shallow water and you feel a sharp sting on the bottom of your foot. Broken seashells, jagged coral, and crusty barnacles are all notorious for causing painful lacerations that go deeper than they look. The tricky part? These cuts are rarely clean. They often involve small pieces of shell or sand embedded in the skin, making infections more likely—especially when saltwater bacteria get involved.

We often treat cuts that were “just rinsed off” and left alone. The result? Swelling, redness, and sometimes drainage a day or two later. If your beach cut isn’t healing or starts to look angry, it’s worth having it looked at professionally to prevent cellulitis or a more serious soft tissue infection.

Jellyfish Encounters Aren’t Just a Sting

Jellyfish aren’t just something you watch out for in movies—they’re a real risk along Florida’s coast, especially during the warmer months when the tides bring them close to shore. Some jellyfish stings are mild and fade with vinegar and patience, but others can cause significant swelling, skin reactions, and pain that spreads beyond the site of contact.

We’ve seen beachgoers with raised welts stretching across their arms and legs, severe itching that disrupts sleep, and even allergic responses that cause shortness of breath. If your jellyfish sting goes beyond mild discomfort or starts to worsen after a few hours, we recommend coming in for medical attention. In some cases, topical treatments and oral medications are needed to reduce inflammation and prevent complications.

Stepping on a Stingray Isn’t Just Bad Luck

You might’ve heard of the “stingray shuffle”—a shuffling walk through shallow water that gives stingrays time to move away before you step directly on top of them. Unfortunately, many people forget or don’t know how to do it. And stepping on a stingray can result in one of the more painful beach injuries we treat.

Stingray barbs are sharp, venomous, and usually land deep in the foot or ankle. The pain can be intense and is often accompanied by bleeding and swelling. While hot water immersion helps with the pain, the wound still needs careful cleaning and monitoring. We’ve seen stingray injuries lead to infections and delayed healing if not properly treated.

Sunburn That Turns Serious

It’s easy to underestimate how strong the Florida sun really is. Especially with the breeze coming off the water, many beachgoers don’t feel the heat until the damage is already done. The result? Sunburns that leave the skin blistered, raw, and extremely painful. Sometimes people come in just because they physically can’t sleep or wear clothing due to the severity.

In more extreme cases, sunburns are accompanied by fever, chills, nausea, and dehydration—signs of sun poisoning. When that happens, urgent care is often the best option for immediate relief and fluid replacement. We help patients manage the pain and avoid complications like infection or long-term skin damage.

Sand in the Eyes, Ears, and More

Let’s talk about the less dramatic but still uncomfortable injuries. Windy beach days stir up fine grains of sand that get everywhere—literally. We’ve treated more than a few patients who show up with red, irritated eyes from trapped sand particles or earaches after water and sand combined to create the perfect environment for an outer ear infection.

Even inhaled sand or bits of debris blown into your nose and throat can cause discomfort and inflammation. It may seem like a small thing, but eye scratches, blocked ear canals, and irritated nasal passages can make the rest of your vacation miserable. If saline rinse and eye drops don’t do the trick, it’s worth stopping by to prevent further issues.

Slip-and-Fall Injuries on Wet Surfaces

Seawalls, boardwalks, and even wet flip-flops can become major hazards when mixed with saltwater. Slipping on a slick surface or misjudging a rocky spot while climbing back into a kayak can lead to sprains, strains, or worse—fractures. One wrong step can mean a twisted ankle or a painful wrist sprain that keeps you off your feet for days.

We see plenty of these injuries during beach season. And while some can be managed with rest and ice, others need an X-ray to rule out a break. If you’re dealing with swelling, bruising, or difficulty putting weight on the joint, don’t try to tough it out. It’s better to know what you’re dealing with than to guess your way through recovery.

Allergic Reactions and Bug Bites That Escalate

It’s not just the ocean that causes trouble—Florida’s coastal parks and dunes are home to no-see-ums, biting flies, ants, and even fire ants that can turn a pleasant outing into a breakout of itchy welts or hives. Combine that with exposure to sunscreen ingredients, new laundry detergents on your beach towels, or a shellfish snack you didn’t know you were allergic to, and reactions can escalate quickly.

We regularly treat patients for allergic skin reactions, swelling from bug bites, and even early signs of anaphylaxis. If you notice a rash that’s spreading, swelling of the face or throat, or trouble breathing, that’s an emergency. But for milder reactions, we can help relieve the discomfort before it worsens or spreads.

Saltwater Isn’t Always Soothing

There’s a common belief that saltwater is good for cuts and scrapes, but the reality is more complicated. While ocean water may help rinse minor wounds, it also contains bacteria—especially in warmer waters and after rainstorms. That’s why we often see infections begin after someone with an open wound spends the day swimming.

If you have a fresh cut, rash, or even a healing surgical scar, avoid getting into the water until it’s fully closed. And if you’ve already taken the plunge and notice unusual pain, redness, or heat around the area afterward, come get it checked out. Early intervention can prevent much bigger issues later.
